🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for the Rlc. George King Serendipity
To ensure that your Rlc. George King Serendipity grows with maximum vigour, produces strong pseudobulbs and offers spectacular blooms year after year, follow these practical growing recommendations closely.
1. Light and Sun Exposure
The Rlc. George King Serendipity needs plenty of light to form bulky pseudobulbs and to encourage healthy flower sheaths. Grow the plant in a very bright spot, protected by 50% shade netting or next to an east- or south-facing window with gentle filtering. Direct sunlight at the peak midday hours should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch. Firm foliage in a medium green to lettuce-green shade indicates that the lighting is ideal.
2. Temperature and Air Circulation
This orchid prefers a temperate to warm climate, thriving at daytime temperatures between 20°C and 29°C and night-time temperatures between 14°C and 18°C. The temperature difference between day and night is a crucial stimulus for the formation of flower buds. Good air circulation around the plant and the pot is essential, keeping the leaves dry and preventing fungi and bacteria from developing in the root system.
3. Watering and Humidity Management
Thanks to its thick pseudobulbs and vigorous roots with a thick velamen layer, the Rlc. George King Serendipity stores water reserves easily. The substrate should dry out almost completely between waterings. During the active growth phase in spring and summer, water generously, allowing the water to drain fully through the holes in the pot. During the rest period after the new growths have matured, or in winter, reduce watering significantly. Keep the relative humidity at ideal levels between 60% and 75%.
4. Substrate and Repotting
The substrate for the Rlc. George King Serendipity should be highly free-draining and airy to prevent waterlogged roots. Use perforated plastic pots or clay pots with a medium to coarse pine bark mix and a small percentage of sphagnum moss on top for balanced moisture retention. Repotting should only be carried out when the substrate shows signs of breaking down or when the plant outgrows the rim of the pot, always coinciding with the emergence of new roots at the base of the most recent growth.
🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding
A balanced feeding programme is essential to support vegetative vigour and sustain the formation of giant flowers on the Rlc. George King Serendipity.
During the development phase of new growths and roots, apply Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser weekly or every two weeks, at a diluted dose. This fertiliser provides the right supply of nitrogen and micronutrients for rooting and for strengthening the plant's structures.
Once the new pseudobulb is fully formed and the flower sheath begins to mature, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom fertiliser. Its formula, enriched in phosphorus and potassium, encourages firm buds to open, intensifies the vividness of the peach tones and enhances the unmistakable fragrance of the bloom.
