About this plant

🌸 Cattleya walkeriana flamea 'Carina' x ('Cambarás' x 'Lineata'): The Royalty of Brazilian Orchids ✨

The Cattleya walkeriana flamea represents the pinnacle of genetic refinement and collecting in the world of tropical orchids. This elite cross combines the superb and much-desired clone 'Carina' with selected offspring of the legendary clones 'Cambarás' and 'Lineata'. Native to the cerrado and rocky outcrops of inland Brazil, this epiphytic and lithophytic species is acclaimed worldwide for the perfect symmetry of its flowers, their waxy, firm substance, and an unmistakable sweet fragrance that fills any room during flowering.

The flamea pattern shows itself through darker brushstrokes and streaks on the petals and sepals, harmoniously contrasting with the background colour and the deep magenta labellum. The Cattleya walkeriana flamea also stands out for its compact and unique growth habit: unlike most species in the genus, its flower spikes emerge directly from the rhizome through modified vegetative pseudobulbs, making every flowering a true botanical event of high collectable value.

✨ Main Attractions of the Cattleya walkeriana flamea 'Carina' x ('Cambarás' x 'Lineata')

  • Exceptional Genetics: A cross between high-pedigree Brazilian parent plants, with a very high likelihood of producing flowers with a dense flamed pattern and a well-formed shape.
  • Intense, Sweet Fragrance: Releases a striking, heady perfume on the sunniest days, reminiscent of vanilla and cinnamon.
  • Waxy, Long-Lasting Flowers: The flowers have excellent substance and a waxy texture, remaining flawless for several weeks.
  • Compact, Robust Habit: Short, spindle-shaped pseudobulbs that make it easy to grow in small spaces, greenhouses or indoor collections.

🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for the Cattleya walkeriana flamea

To optimise root development in your Cattleya walkeriana flamea and encourage spectacular blooms with intense pattern and colour, follow these specialist growing guidelines closely.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

The Cattleya walkeriana flamea is an extremely sun-loving orchid, which means it needs quite high light levels to flower abundantly. In its natural habitat, it grows exposed to filtered sun at the tops of trees or on rocky escarpments. Grow it in very bright light, protecting it only from direct midday sun to avoid leaf scorch. Suitable sun exposure keeps the pseudobulbs firm and the leaves a yellowish green, sometimes with a protective reddish tinge.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

This species enjoys warm to temperate climates, thriving ideally with daytime temperatures between 22°C and 30°C and night-time temperatures between 14°C and 18°C. A drop in temperature between day and night is beneficial for stimulating the maturation of new growths. Air circulation should be vigorous and constant. Well-ventilated surroundings are crucial so that the roots dry quickly after watering, preventing root rot and pest attacks.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

The thick, velamen-covered roots of the Cattleya walkeriana flamea are adapted to absorb moisture quickly and then dry out soon afterwards. Water generously during the period of active growth, but allow the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. In autumn and winter, when the plant enters its resting period, significantly reduce how often you water, giving only the minimum so that the pseudobulbs do not become excessively wrinkled. Keep the relative humidity of the air between 50% and 70%.

4. Growing Medium and Mounting

Drainage is the most critical factor in growing this species. If you prefer to grow it in a pot, use clay pots with side holes, filled exclusively with medium to coarse pine bark and a small amount of sphagnum moss on top. Alternatively, the Cattleya walkeriana flamea shows its full potential when mounted on natural cork slabs or hardwood logs, allowing its root system to spread freely with excellent aeration.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Fertilising

A regular, well-structured feeding plan is essential to sustain the vegetative vigour of this miniature orchid and to ensure robust, well-coloured flower spikes.

During the stage of new growth and root development in spring and summer, apply the Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser weekly at a mild dilution. Its balanced formula strengthens the cell structure of the pseudobulbs and stimulates deep rooting.

Once the new pseudobulbs reach maturity and the time for flower induction approaches, switch to the Orchid Focus Bloom fertiliser. With a higher phosphorus and potassium content, this fertiliser encourages the formation of healthy flower buds and enhances the intensity of the pink-magenta flames on the petals.

Add the stunning Cattleya walkeriana flamea 'Carina' x ('Cambarás' x 'Lineata') to your collection and enjoy one of the most coveted and fragrant orchids in the world!
