About this plant

🌸 Paphiopedilum Robin Hood: The Classic Elegance of the Slipper Orchid ✨

The Paphiopedilum Robin Hood is a classic and fascinating hybrid belonging to the famous genus of orchids commonly known as "Venus's Slipper". This hybrid stands out for its majestic, large flower, characterised by an inflated pouch-shaped (or slipper-shaped) labellum and an imposing, colourful dorsal sepal. The flower of the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood displays a rich combination of reddish tones, wine-brown, green and touches of white, with a waxy, glossy texture that makes it look like a true living sculpture.

Mostly terrestrial or humicolous in habit, the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood grows as rosettes of elegant, leathery green leaves, from the centre of which the upright, solitary flower spike emerges. Unlike many other orchid genera, the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood has no pseudobulbs to store water, which means its root system prefers a constant, balanced level of moisture in the growing medium. It is an extremely rewarding plant, perfect for enriching indoor collections or temperate greenhouses, with long-lasting flowers that can remain perfect for almost two months.

✨ Main Attractions of the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood

  • Exceptional, Long-Lasting Flowering: Each flower of the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood stands out for its waxy, glossy finish, remaining flawless on the plant for 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Unique Botanical Design: The distinctive shape of the labellum and the harmonious combination of colours make this hybrid a sophisticated centrepiece in any space.
  • Excellent Adaptation to Indoor Growing: Thanks to its moderate light requirements, the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood adapts perfectly to being grown indoors, near well-lit windows.
  • Compact, Tidy Growth: Its rosette habit makes it easy to grow in medium-sized pots without taking up too much space.

🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood

Growing the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood successfully requires attention to a few simple details, ensuring a cool environment, constant moisture and good airflow around the root system.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

The Paphiopedilum Robin Hood is an orchid for partial shade to filtered light. In nature, the ancestors of this genus grow on the forest floor beneath the tree canopy. For this reason, avoid direct sunlight, which can easily scorch its foliage. Place the plant in a spot with good indirect light, such as east- or north-facing windows, or under soft filtered light in a greenhouse.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

This hybrid prefers intermediate to cool temperatures. It thrives ideally with daytime temperatures between 18°C and 24°C and slightly cooler nights (13°C to 16°C). A slight difference between day and night temperatures in autumn encourages the production of new flower spikes. Ensure good air circulation to avoid stagnant moisture building up on the leaves.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

As the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood has no pseudobulbs to store reserves, the growing medium should never dry out completely for long periods. Water regularly to keep the medium slightly moist, but never waterlogged. Excess water collecting at the bottom of the pot can cause root rot. The ideal relative humidity for growing is between 50% and 70%.

4. Growing Medium and Pot Types

Use plastic or ceramic pots with excellent drainage at the base. The ideal growing medium for the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood should retain some moisture, while ensuring excellent aeration and quick drainage. We recommend a mix based on fine to medium grade pine bark combined with perlite and chopped sphagnum moss. Avoid using materials that become waterlogged and stop the roots from breathing.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding

To keep the foliage of the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood a healthy green and encourage the continuous production of new leaf rosettes, apply the Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser fortnightly during the active growing period in spring and summer, using a gentle dose.

Once the new rosettes have matured and are ready for the flowering phase in late summer and autumn, switch the feed to Orchid Focus Bloom. This enhanced formula helps develop sturdy spikes and more vivid, longer-lasting flowers.

Browse our full range of feeding solutions in the orchid fertilisers section. For detailed taxonomic information on the genus Paphiopedilum, visit the international portal Plants of the World Online (Kew Science).

Add the Paphiopedilum Robin Hood to your collection and enjoy the timeless allure of one of the most elegant orchids in the world!
