About this plant

🌸 Paphiopedilum henryanum: The Exotic Speckled Slipper Orchid ✨

The Paphiopedilum henryanum is a striking species of slipper orchid native to the limestone mountain regions of southern China and northern Vietnam. Discovered in the late 20th century and named in honour of the botanist Henry Azadehdel, this miniature to medium-sized orchid is widely acclaimed by collectors around the world thanks to the extraordinary contrast and vibrant colours of its solitary, waxy-textured, long-lasting flowers.

With a unique visual combination, the Paphiopedilum henryanum stands out for its broad, yellowish-green dorsal sepal covered in dense, prominent purple blotches, wavy petals with reddish-brown speckles, and a pouch-shaped lip ranging from pinkish-purple to intense magenta. The narrow, leathery, bright green foliage forms compact rosettes, making this species perfect for collectors looking for exotic plants of high ornamental value that take up little space.

✨ Main Attractions of Paphiopedilum henryanum

  • Vivid, Contrasting Flower Colours: It features a shimmering magenta pouch combined with a speckled dorsal sepal of great aesthetic impact.
  • Long-Lasting Waxy Flowers: The individual flowers stay flawless on the plant for several weeks, keeping their characteristic freshness and sheen.
  • Compact and Elegant Habit: It develops dense, small-sized leaf rosettes, ideal for growing in well-lit indoor spaces or collection greenhouses.
  • Rare Collector's Botanical Species: A highly coveted specimen among enthusiasts of the Paphiopedilum genus for its unusual colour pattern and exotic beauty.

🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for Paphiopedilum henryanum

To ensure that your Paphiopedilum henryanum grows healthily, produces vigorous leaf rosettes and flowers lavishly every year, follow this detailed guide of growing recommendations.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

As it is mostly a lithophytic species that grows in the shade of rock crevices and forest vegetation, the Paphiopedilum henryanum prefers moderate to soft lighting. Grow the plant in indirect or filtered light, avoiding direct sunlight at all costs, as it can cause irreversible burns on its fleshy leaves. An east- or north-facing window, or a 70% shade area in the greenhouse, offers the perfect light intensity for ideal photosynthesis.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

This orchid adapts perfectly to intermediate to cool/temperate temperature regimes. Ideal daytime temperatures range between 18°C and 24°C in summer, while in winter it tolerates lower night-time temperatures, between 10°C and 14°C. This temperature variation between seasons is essential to stimulate the emergence of the flower spike from the centre of mature rosettes. Maintain gentle, constant air circulation in the growing environment to prevent stagnant moisture from building up in the rosettes.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

Unlike other orchid genera, the Paphiopedilum henryanum has no pseudobulbs to store water, so it depends on constant moisture around the root system. The substrate should be kept slightly damp throughout the year, but never waterlogged. Water as soon as the top layer of the substrate begins to lose moisture, slightly reducing the frequency during the colder winter months. Keep the relative humidity high, ideally between 60% and 80%.

4. Substrate and Repotting

The substrate for the Paphiopedilum henryanum should retain moisture evenly while also providing excellent aeration for the hairy roots. We recommend using small, well-drained plastic pots with a mix of fine to medium-grade pine bark and a suitable proportion of good-quality sphagnum moss for water retention. Because of its calcicolous nature in the wild, adding small fragments of limestone or crushed shells to the substrate may benefit its development. Repotting should be done every 1 to 2 years, after flowering.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Fertilising

The Paphiopedilum henryanum is a plant that is sensitive to excessive build-up of mineral salts, so it requires a balanced feeding plan, but with gentle, diluted doses.

During the vegetative growth phase and the emergence of new leaves, apply the Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser every two weeks at a very diluted concentration (about half or a quarter of the recommended dose). This feeding ensures balanced root development and strengthens the rosettes.

When the new rosette reaches maturity and approaches the flowering season, switch the fertiliser to Orchid Focus Bloom. This formula, enriched in phosphorus and potassium, encourages the appearance of the flower bud and intensifies the brightness and vividness of the flower's colours.

Add the fantastic Paphiopedilum henryanum to your collection today and be enchanted by the eccentricity of this slipper orchid!
