About this plant

🌸 Neoregelia purpurea: Tropical Elegance and Vibrant Foliage ✨

The Neoregelia purpurea is an epiphytic bromeliad of singular beauty, native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and widely appreciated for its vibrant ornamental foliage and rosette structure. This species stands out for its stiff, symmetrically arranged leaves, which develop intense reddish, purplish and coppery tones when exposed to good light. The centre of the rosette forms a natural cup or reservoir ("tank") where the plant collects water and nutrients in the wild.

Ideal for growing in pots, terrariums, vertical gardens, or mounted on logs and wooden supports, the Neoregelia purpurea is an extremely versatile, low-maintenance plant. For lovers of tropical plants and exotic bromeliads, this species offers lasting aesthetic value, keeping its vibrancy and colour all year round.

✨ Key Features of Neoregelia purpurea

  • Vibrant Ornamental Foliage: Stiff, glossy leaves that develop intense purple and reddish pigmentation with the right light exposure.
  • Unique Structure and Central Reservoir: Forms a perfect rosette with a central tank, characteristic of epiphytic bromeliads.
  • High Resilience and Low Maintenance: A hardy, adaptable plant, ideal for both experienced collectors and beginners.
  • Excellent for Landscape Design: Perfect for decorating bright interiors, greenhouses, shaded borders or tropical gardens.

🌱 Practical Guide to Growing and Caring for Neoregelia purpurea

To ensure that your Neoregelia purpurea keeps its vibrant colouring and grows healthily, follow this practical guide to growing recommendations.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

The Neoregelia purpurea needs plenty of indirect light to intensify its purplish tones. Insufficient light causes the leaves to stay mostly green. Grow it in very bright locations, with light filtered through 50% to 70% shade netting, or near sunny windows. Direct sun in the early morning hours is beneficial, but avoid the scorching midday sun so as not to burn the leaves.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

As a species of tropical origin, it ideally thrives at temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. It does not tolerate frost or prolonged temperatures below 10°C. Keep the plant in a place with good air circulation, which prevents fungal problems and keeps the central reservoir fresh.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

Watering the Neoregelia purpurea differs from most potted plants. Always keep the central tank or cup filled with clean water, renewing it regularly (every 1 to 2 weeks) to prevent stagnation. The substrate should be kept slightly damp, but never waterlogged. In colder months, reduce the amount of water in the reservoir to prevent the rosette from rotting.

4. Substrate and Repotting

As an epiphytic bromeliad, its root system serves mainly for anchorage. The substrate should be extremely light, airy and fast-draining. We recommend a mix of medium-grade pine bark, coconut fibre and a small amount of perlite or sphagnum moss. Avoid dense garden soil or substrates that retain too much water.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding

Bromeliads absorb nutrients mainly through their leaves and the central reservoir. Feeding should be light and diluted so as not to burn the plant.

Apply a well-diluted foliar fertiliser (at 1/4 of the manufacturer's recommended dose) every 3 or 4 weeks during the spring and summer months. Spray gently over the leaves and into the water in the central tank.

Add the stunning Neoregelia purpurea to your collection today and bring the vibrancy of the tropics into your space!
