About this plant

🌸 Masdevallia Orange: The Exotic Charm and Brilliance of Neotropical Orchids ✨

The Masdevallia Orange is one of the most fascinating orchids, and one of the most sought after by collectors who appreciate the unique beauty of high-altitude neotropical species. Belonging to the subtribe Pleurothallidinae, this magnificent orchid stands out for its triangular flowers with fused sepals that extend into elegant, slender tails. Its vibrant, warm orange colouring immediately catches the eye in any greenhouse, conservatory or well-ventilated growing space.

Native to the cloud forests of the Andes mountain ranges in South America, plants of the genus Masdevallia are used to cool, humid environments with excellent air circulation. The Masdevallia Orange is ideal for growers looking for a compact plant with an elegant habit that flowers repeatedly throughout the year. With the right care in terms of light and watering, the Masdevallia Orange will reward your efforts with a continuous and memorable floral display.

✨ Main Features of the Masdevallia Orange

  • Vibrant Orange Flowers: The Masdevallia Orange stands out for the intense shade of its flowers, creating a stunning contrast with the bright green of its fleshy leaves.
  • Unique Botanical Shape: The fusion of the sepals and the presence of elongated tails give this orchid an architectural and highly exotic appearance.
  • Compact Habit, Without Pseudobulbs: As it has no pseudobulbs to store water, it forms a compact, tufted structure, perfect for small spaces or growing cabinets.
  • Frequent Flowering: Under ideal conditions of humidity and temperature, it can produce new flower spikes at various times of the year.

🌱 Practical Growing Guide for the Masdevallia Orange

As it is an orchid originating from cool, humid mountain habitats, the Masdevallia Orange requires some attention to maintaining humidity and controlling temperatures in summer. Follow this guide to ensure success with your plant.

1. Lighting and Sun Exposure

The Masdevallia Orange prefers moderate shade to filtered light (around 50% to 70% shading). Strictly avoid direct sunlight, as its thin leaves, with no pseudobulbs to support them, scorch easily and the plant can dehydrate quickly. A spot with bright, soft, indirect light is ideal for its healthy development.

2. Temperature and Ventilation

This species enjoys intermediate to cool temperatures. The ideal temperatures are between 12°C and 22°C. During the hot summer months in Portugal, it is essential to keep the plant in a cool, shaded spot with excellent ventilation to avoid overheating of the root system. Stagnant air and excessive heat are the greatest enemies of the Masdevallia Orange.

3. Watering and Air Humidity

Due to the lack of water-storage structures, the substrate of the Masdevallia Orange should never dry out completely. Water regularly with good-quality water (preferably rainwater or reverse-osmosis water) to keep the growing medium slightly moist, but never waterlogged. The relative humidity of the air should be kept high, ideally between 60% and 80%.

4. Substrate and Drainage

The substrate needs to retain moisture without compromising the aeration of the delicate roots. We recommend a fine mix based on selected small-grade pine bark, coconut fibre and perlite. This combination allows the roots to breathe freely, retaining the necessary moisture while quickly draining away excess water.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Feeding

Masdevallia are very sensitive to the build-up of mineral salts around the roots, so feeding should be gentle and diluted. During the vegetative growth phase and the production of new leaves, apply the Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser at a reduced dose (half or a quarter of the recommended dose). When the flower spikes are preparing to emerge and appear, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom to strengthen the buds and intensify the orange colour of the flowers.

Explore our range of specialist nutrition in the fertilisers and nutrition for exotic plants section. For more botanical information and taxonomic records on the genus Masdevallia, consult the resources of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Add the Masdevallia Orange to your collection and be amazed by the elegance and exotic charm of this incredible mountain orchid!
