About this plant

🌸 Coilostylis ciliaris: The Spectacular Fringed-Lip Orchid ✨

The Coilostylis ciliaris (formerly classified as Epidendrum ciliare) is a fascinating epiphytic orchid, native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Commonly known for the architectural form of its flowers, this species stands out for its narrow, yellowish-green petals and sepals and a deeply fringed white labellum, which resembles delicate feathers or eyelashes. In addition to its unusual beauty, the Coilostylis ciliaris gives off an intense, sweet scent at night, designed by nature to attract specific pollinators.

Medium-sized with a sympodial growth habit, the Coilostylis ciliaris develops sturdy, rigid pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients efficiently. It is an extremely hardy orchid that flowers generously, making it perfect for experienced collectors and for enthusiasts who want to add an exotic, fragrant orchid to their collection in Portugal.

✨ Key Features of Coilostylis ciliaris

  • Exotic Fringed Flowers: The Coilostylis ciliaris produces flower spikes with multiple flowers, each with an artistically cut white labellum and narrow green sepals.
  • Intense Night-Time Fragrance: It releases an enveloping perfume during the night, making it ideal for greenhouses, conservatories or bright indoor spaces.
  • High Resilience: Its fleshy pseudobulbs give it excellent tolerance of short dry spells between waterings.
  • Versatile Cultivation: It grows perfectly in plastic pots with good drainage, hanging baskets or mounted on natural cork.

🌱 Practical Growing Guide for Coilostylis ciliaris

To keep your Coilostylis ciliaris healthy and ensure lush annual flowering, it is important to simulate the conditions of its natural neotropical habitat. See the essential care tips below.

1. Ideal Lighting and Position

The Coilostylis ciliaris prefers a **medium to high** light level (bright, filtered light). It tolerates a few hours of direct sun in the early morning or late afternoon, but it should be protected from strong midday sun to avoid leaf burn. Good light is the main factor in encouraging the production of flower spikes.

2. Temperature and Ventilation

It adapts very well to temperate to warm climates, with ideal daytime temperatures between 18°C and 28°C, tolerating drops down to 12°C in winter. It needs good air circulation around its roots and foliage to prevent fungal problems.

3. Watering and Ambient Humidity

During the active growth phase (spring and summer), water generously as soon as the substrate starts to feel dry to the touch. In autumn and winter, reduce the frequency of watering, allowing the substrate to dry out almost completely between waterings. It stays healthy with a relative air humidity of between 50% and 70%.

4. Substrate and Drainage

The substrate must ensure ultra-fast drainage and excellent aeration for the roots. We recommend a mix of medium-grade pine bark and high-quality coconut fibre, making sure the roots never sit in stagnant water.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Fertilising

During the vegetative growth period in spring, apply Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser regularly to encourage the development of new pseudobulbs and leaves. Once the new growths have reached maturity and the first flower sheaths appear, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom to promote more abundant, longer-lasting flowering.

Explore our full selection of specialist nutrients in the fertilisers and orchid nutrition section. For the up-to-date taxonomy and botanical records of this species, visit the Plants of the World Online (Kew Science) portal.

Add the Coilostylis ciliaris to your collection and enjoy the visual spectacle and unique scent of this Neotropical species!
