🌱 Practical Growing Guide for the Cattleya Snow White
To ensure that your Cattleya Snow White grows healthy and produces spectacular flowers year after year, it is essential to simulate the conditions of its native tropical environment. Below, we summarise all the essential care.
1. Ideal Lighting and Position
The Cattleya Snow White requires bright, abundant light in order to flower vigorously. Ideally, keep it under 40% to 50% shade. Direct sunlight should be avoided during the hottest hours of the day (between 11am and 4pm) to prevent leaf scorch. Leaves of a light lettuce-green shade indicate that the plant is receiving the perfect amount of light.
2. Temperature and Ventilation
This orchid thrives in intermediate to warm climates, preferring temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. A slight drop in temperature at night is beneficial for encouraging the emergence of new flower spikes. Also ensure constant air circulation in the orchid house to keep the roots aerated and prevent fungal problems.
3. Watering and Air Humidity
The golden rule for the Cattleya Snow White is to let the substrate dry out almost completely between waterings. During the active growth phase in spring and summer, water generously. In autumn and winter, reduce the frequency of watering. Keeping it at a relative air humidity of between 60% and 70% will help the development of healthy, velamen-covered roots.
4. Substrate and Drainage
The substrate should provide fast drainage and excellent root aeration. We recommend a mix of medium-grade pine bark, perlite and sphagnum moss to maintain adequate moisture without becoming waterlogged. Avoid water collecting at the bottom of the pot.
🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Fertilising
Regular feeding is essential to nourish the new pseudobulbs and ensure lush blooms on the Cattleya Snow White. During the phase when new shoots and roots are emerging, use the Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser to encourage robust vegetative growth. Once the pseudobulbs have completed their maturation, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom to promote the appearance of flower sheaths and increase the size of the flowers.
