About this plant

🕷️ Brassia gireoudiana: The Largest and Most Impressive Spider Orchid ✨

The Brassia gireoudiana is widely recognised among botanists and collectors as one of the most spectacular species in the entire Brassia genus. Native to the humid highland forests of Costa Rica and Panama, this epiphytic orchid stands out for producing the largest and most dramatic flowers of the group popularly known as "spider orchids". Its long, slightly arching flower spikes carry multiple flowers whose slender, extremely elongated sepals and petals can exceed 30 centimetres in length.

With vibrant colouring in shades of lime green to greenish yellow, contrasted by intense reddish-brown or chocolate markings at the base of the lip and petals, Brassia gireoudiana is a true showpiece in any collection. In addition to its unmistakable visual impact, this species releases a pleasant, fresh fragrance during the brightest hours of the day.

✨ Main Attractions of Brassia gireoudiana

  • Extraordinary, Giant Flowers: Produces dense flower spikes with flowers whose pointed sepals extend gracefully and vertically, creating a dramatic and unique visual effect.
  • Exotic, Gentle Fragrance: Has a pleasant, slightly spicy perfume that attracts pollinators and delicately scents the greenhouse or growing space.
  • Excellent Growth Vigour: Develops ovoid, compressed pseudobulbs with consistent dark green foliage, and grows quickly when kept in the right conditions.
  • Highly Valuable Collector's Species: One of the most sought-after species in the genus because of the size of its blooms compared with other commercial Brassia hybrids.

🌱 Practical Growing and Care Guide for Brassia gireoudiana

To grow your Brassia gireoudiana successfully and ensure lush annual blooms, it is essential to replicate the humid, airy forest environment the species comes from. Follow this practical guide to growing recommendations.

1. Light and Sun Exposure

Brassia gireoudiana appreciates a medium to high light level, preferring bright but filtered light. We recommend growing it under shade netting of between 50% and 60%. Avoid direct sunlight during the middle of the day, as excessive heat can scorch the long, tender leaves. Healthy lettuce-green foliage is the main sign that the plant is receiving the right amount of light.

2. Temperature and Air Circulation

As it is native to mid-altitude mountain forests, this species adapts perfectly to an intermediate to warm climate. Ideal temperatures are between 18°C and 26°C during the day, and it tolerates slight night-time drops to between 13°C and 15°C. A gentle temperature difference between day and night benefits flower initiation. Air circulation should be constant to avoid the build-up of stagnant moisture in the leaf axils and to prevent fungal problems.

3. Watering and Humidity Management

Unlike some Cattleya species, Brassia gireoudiana does not have a prolonged dry rest period. During the active growth phase (spring and summer), water frequently to keep the substrate evenly moist, but never waterlogged. Allow the surface of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce the watering frequency, but keep the ambient humidity high, ideally between 60% and 80%.

4. Substrate and Repotting

The ideal substrate for Brassia gireoudiana should combine balanced moisture retention with excellent drainage. We recommend using a mix based on medium-grade pine bark combined with a portion of high-quality sphagnum moss. Repotting should be carried out every two years or when the substrate begins to break down, preferably in early spring, as soon as new roots appear at the base of the newly formed growth.

🧪 Recommended Nutrition and Fertilising

As a fast-growing orchid that produces a lot of biomass and long flower spikes, Brassia gireoudiana responds very well to a regular feeding plan throughout the vegetative phase.

During the period when new roots and pseudobulbs are forming, apply Orchid Focus Grow fertiliser weekly or every 15 days at a well-diluted dose. This product provides the ideal ratio of nitrogen and micronutrients for strong, healthy growth.

Once the new pseudobulbs have reached their full size and matured, switch to Orchid Focus Bloom. This feed, rich in phosphorus and potassium, stimulates the emergence of flower spikes and strengthens the development of the large flowers characteristic of the species.

Browse our wide selection of products in the orchid fertilisers category. To check the official taxonomy and geographical distribution of the species, visit the Plants of the World Online (Kew Science) page.
