Description
Oncidium altissimum: The Dancing Orchid with Towering Spikes
Oncidium altissimum, popularly known as the “dancing orchid” due to the graceful shape of its blooms, is a species native to the Caribbean and parts of South America. It is celebrated for its tall flower spikes and the abundance of its vibrant blossoms.
Key Characteristics:
- Vibrant and Abundant Blooms: Oncidium altissimum produces a profusion of small, delicate flowers, usually in shades of yellow and brown, with a lip resembling a ballerina’s skirt.
- Towering Flower Spikes: The name altissimum (meaning “very tall”) is fitting, as this species can develop impressively long flower spikes that create a striking visual display.
- Growth Habit: This is an epiphytic orchid, which means it naturally grows on other plants (typically trees), using them for support but not as a parasite.
How to Grow Oncidium altissimum:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight during the hottest hours of the day to prevent leaf burn.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm to intermediate temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F) during the day, with a slight drop at night.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally between 60% and 80%. In dry environments, mist around the plant or use a humidifier to maintain moisture levels.
- Watering: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to nearly dry out between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, as excessive moisture can cause root rot.
- Potting Mix: Use a well-draining, aerated mix designed for epiphytic orchids. A combination of pine bark, charcoal, and sphagnum moss is ideal.
- Fertilizing: Feed monthly during active growth (spring and summer) with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Reduce feeding during fall and winter.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the potting mix has broken down or the roots become overcrowded. The best time to repot is after blooming.
Additional Care:
- Ventilation: Ensure good air circulation around the plant to help prevent fungal infections.
- Pests and Diseases: Watch for pests like mealybugs and aphids. Inspect regularly and treat promptly if any issues arise.
With proper care, Oncidium altissimum can bloom annually, rewarding you with majestic spikes and a dazzling show of colorful “dancers.” It’s an orchid that will surely add life and motion to your collection.
