Energy Efficiency: Completely Off-Grid and Green!
Our journey towards energy efficiency began some time ago, and today we are pleased to announce that Tropical Orchids Portugal is completely off-grid from the public grid. This means we are 100% energy self-sufficient! How did we achieve this?
Second-Generation Solar Panels: We invested in cutting-edge technology, using second-generation solar panels with greater energy efficiency. These panels capture the sun’s energy in an optimised way, ensuring continuous production of clean electricity.
Energy Storage with 10kW Batteries: To ensure energy supply even on days with lower solar production, we rely on a robust system of 10kW batteries. This strategic storage allows us to keep all our operations running without interruption, day and night.
Reducing Plastics: A Long-Term Commitment
Since 2013, Tropical Orchids Portugal has been leading change in the industry by eliminating plastic from our packaging. Our plastic reduction initiative has been a remarkable success:
Sustainable Packaging: We replaced plastic with special paper, carefully selected to ensure your plants arrive in perfect condition, properly packed and protected.
Tangible Results: We estimate that, to date, we have already achieved a reduction of approximately 1.5 tonnes of plastic! This is a testament to our commitment to minimising the environmental impact of our operations.
Smart Water Management and Efficient Cooling
Water is a precious resource, and at Tropical Orchids Portugal, we manage it with the utmost care and intelligence:
Rainwater Reuse: We implemented systems for rainwater reuse, capturing and using rainwater for our irrigation needs and other operations, thereby reducing our dependence on water resources.
Innovative Water Cooling System: To maintain the ideal environment for our orchids, we use a state-of-the-art water cooling system. This system is made up of 0.02mm micro-sprinklers that spray water at 70 bar of pressure, instantly forming a fine mist. This mist not only reduces the ambient temperature efficiently, but also helps control the humidity of the space, which is essential for the plants’ well-being.
Advanced Climate Control: The entire climate control system is managed by multiple probes and a climate control unit, ensuring precise and optimised control of environmental conditions.
