Description

The Cattleya bicolor is a stunning Brazilian orchid native to the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. Known for its bicolor flowers and intoxicating fragrance, this medium to large-sized Cattleya is a valuable addition to any orchid collection.

Characteristics of Cattleya bicolor:

  • Size: The plant can reach up to 60 cm in height, with thick elongated pseudobulbs and long, leathery leaves.
  • Flowers: The flowers, arranged in erect clusters with up to seven flowers per stem, are the highlight of the Cattleya bicolor. The sepals – the outer parts of the flower – come in shades of pink-purple, beautifully contrasting with the white petals. The lip, in general, is white with magenta stripes in the center.
  • Flowering: Flowering mainly occurs in spring and early summer, providing a visual and olfactory spectacle for several weeks.
  • Fragrance: The Cattleya bicolor has a sweet and distinctive fragrance, reminiscent of exotic spices like vanilla.

Symbolism of Cattleya bicolor:

  • Duality and harmony: The contrasting colors of the flowers symbolize the duality present in nature and the harmony that can exist between opposing elements.
  • Elegance and sophistication: The classic beauty of the Cattleya bicolor evokes elegance, sophistication, and refinement.
  • Perfume and sensuality: The intoxicating aroma of the flower may be associated with sensuality, passion, and mystery.

Care for Cattleya bicolor:

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods as it can burn the leaves. Filtered light near east-facing windows or diffuse light in well-lit environments are ideal.
  • Irrigation: Keep the substrate moist, but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the substrate is almost dry to the touch, using warm water.
  • Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), provide a balanced fertilizer diluted in water every two weeks. Reduce the frequency of fertilization in autumn and winter.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature ranges between 18°C and 27°C. Avoid extreme temperatures as they can affect flowering.
  • Humidity: The Cattleya bicolor appreciates moderate humidity (around 50-70%). Use a humidifier or place the pot on a tray with water and pebbles to increase air humidity.
  • Substrate: Use a lightweight and well-draining substrate, such as a mixture of pine bark and sphagnum.
  • Repotting: Repot the orchid every two or three years or when the pot becomes overcrowded, using a pot with good drainage and suitable substrate.

Tips for Success with Cattleya bicolor:

  • Provide adequate support for the plant, as its pseudobulbs tend to grow vertically.
  • After flowering, cut the flower stalk just below the last node that bloomed. This will encourage the plant to produce new shoots and flowers.
  • Carefully observe the plant for signs of pests or diseases and treat them promptly.
